Different Brains, Real Friends: A Young Person’s Guide to Understanding Neurodivergence

About Course

This warm, engaging course helps neurotypical children and teenagers genuinely understand why some of their friends and classmates experience the world differently - not because something is wrong with them, but because their brains are wired in a beautifully different way. You will explore what neurodivergence actually means, why some people react strongly to things that seem small, what meltdowns and shutdowns really are, and how to show up as a truly good friend. No pity, no fixing - just real understanding and real friendship.

What Will You Learn?

  • Explain what neurodiversity and neurodivergence mean in your own words, without using clinical or confusing language
  • Recognise common neurodivergent profiles including ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and others - and understand that many people have more than one
  • Describe why some friends experience noise, touch, change, or social situations very differently to you - and why that makes complete sense for their brain
  • Respond with kindness and calm when a friend is having a meltdown or shutdown, instead of feeling confused or scared
  • Explain to another person why some classmates need different rules, supports, or accommodations at school - and why that is fair, not unfair
  • Name the genuine strengths that often come with different kinds of neurodivergent thinking
  • Use specific, practical strategies to be a more inclusive and supportive friend to someone whose brain works differently to yours
  • Recognise when a neurodivergent friend might need space, support, or simply someone who gets it - and know how to offer that
