About Course

This course unpacks the neurology behind emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA) and gives parents, educators, and school counsellors a clear, compassionate framework for understanding why a child cannot attend school and what actually helps. You will learn to identify the specific drivers behind your child or student’s avoidance, design a gradual reintegration plan that starts where the child is, and navigate the school system with confidence. Built on trauma-informed and strengths-based principles, this course replaces blame and pressure with understanding and practical action.

What Will You Learn?

  • Explain the difference between EBSA, school refusal, and truancy and describe why each requires a completely different response
  • Identify the specific neurological and environmental factors driving avoidance for an individual child, including sensory, social, academic, and relational contributors
  • Explain why consequence-based and forced-attendance approaches escalate EBSA and articulate the evidence-based alternative
  • Design a gradual, trauma-informed reintegration plan that begins at the child's current capacity rather than the school's attendance expectations
  • Prepare for and confidently participate in school meetings, including how to request formal adjustments and document agreements in writing
  • Identify the legal rights available to Australian families around alternative education arrangements when full-time attendance is not currently possible
  • Use specific communication strategies to explain EBSA to extended family, school staff, and other professionals in a way that reduces judgment and builds genuine understanding
  • Support your child's mental health, self-worth, and identity during an extended period of school avoidance without inadvertently reinforcing shame
